Dance New Air

A dance festival held once every two years. Ten days filling Aoyama with dancing!

This installment of Dance New Air is the seventh counting from the festival’s launch as Dance Biennale Tokyo in 2002. It will be staged mainly at Spiral Hall and at the Tokyo Women’s Plaza as a new venue. It will feature six dance works that have a strong linkage with music and words, and an exhibition held as a tie-up program at Spiral Garden. The assortment of programs will be even more diverse than in the 2014 edition, and encompass the screening of dance films at Theatre Image Forum, a book fair at the main store of AOYAMA BOOK CENTER, dance performances at the exhibition site, and a showcase of Japanese artists directed to overseas presenters at DDD AOYAMA CROSS THEATER.
Dancing and enjoyment of dance are rooted deeply in our bodies and have been transmitted down through the ages from ancient times as part of our DNA. The festival name “Dance New Air” (DNA) expresses our strong desire to carry this DNA on, far into the future.
One of the many dance genres, contemporary dance is characterized by free bodily expression and holds many possibilities. Nevertheless, the circle of people who understand and savor its artistry, depth, and appeal is still limited. Life can be greatly enriched by developing an appreciation of the arts and injecting this experience back into one’s own everyday world. Dance New Air plays the role of an entrance whose door is flung wide open to all for their first encounter with contemporary dance. We have continued to hold this festival once every two years with the aspiration of having it serve as an event for firsthand experience of culture and the arts by people of all generations and nurturing the development of highly sensitive powers of creativity and communication.

Discover the present and future of dance in Aoyama, where art meets everyday life!
