Dance Biennale Tokyo, Dance Triennale Tokyo ARCHIVE
This new dance festival, Dance New Air, succeeds the Dance Triennale Tokyo which has been presenting contemporary dance in Aoyama since 2002. This international festival originally started in the summer of 2002. Biennial at first, then triennial from 2006, the festival aims to broaden and disseminate contemporary dance, to enrich the cultural soil and to nurture original creativity through exchanges among contemporary international artists around the world.
From its second edition in 2004, the festival added Spiral Hall to its venues, and from the third edition in 2006, Theater Image Forum joined to screen dance films and the Aoyama Book Center main store began hosting a dance book fair. The festival became triennial from that year, filling the area within a 500-meter radius of Aoyama Theater with many contemporary dance performances and related events. As the years went by the festival gained wider recognition and became one of the largest contemporary dance festivals in Japan.
The last edition of Dance Triennale Tokyo in 2012 featured many performances at Aoyama Round Theater, Spiral Hall and Goethe Institut as well as workshops, outdoor performances at the piloti space in front of the Children’s Castle, showcases in the front window space of Spiral facing Aoyama-dori Avenue, a book fair at the Aoyama Book Center main store, and symposia at the United Nations University. It attracted a total of over 20,000 people both from Japan and overseas.
