ART IN THE BODY
Dance Photography Workshop
by Yulia Skogoreva

“ART IN THE BODY” is a photography workshop by Yulia Skogoreva, the official photographer of Dance New Air since 2018.

During the workshop, Yulia will introduce her works, talk about techniques of capturing movements in a still image and share some tips on photographing dancers. Participants will get an opportunity to practice their skills and photograph Ema Yuasa (dancer/choreographer, participant of Dance New Air in 2019 and 2020), who will join the workshop as a model.

Yulia Skogoreva, who has photographed many dancers, and Ema Yuasa, who has been taken by various photographers, will share ideas about “dance and photography” from their perspectives, and have discussions based on the photos taken by the participants in the workshop.

Yulia Skogoreva
Russian-born fine art and documentary photographer Yulia Skogoreva has been based in Tokyo for the past 10 years. Having majored in Japanese studies at Moscow State University Yulia moved to Japan where she graduated from Nippon Photography Institute.
Movement is the ultimate form of expression for Yulia, often more eloquent than words. While she is not a dancer herself she puts together her thoughts and feelings in an audibly silent but visually striking photographic representation.
Yulia’s photographic vision was shaped while working with Japanese butoh dancers during a theatrical festival in Moscow. She got inspired by the history of the Butoh movement and the backstage life of artists and set out on a journey to photograph dancers capturing the idea of the movement in space. Since then with her camera Yulia has been discovering the unique features and unwrapping challenges of the contemporary Japanese society through the prism of movement and dance.
