Kyoto-based artist Zan Yamashita finally brings his masterpiece to Tokyo for the first time. Premiered at the Itami Ai Hall in Hyogo in 2002, over the past 12 years IT IS WRITTEN THERE has toured Kyoto, Brussels and Istanbul before reaching Seoul last year where Yamashita collaborated with Korea’s Ahn Aesoon Dance Company. It’s this version that will be presented in Tokyo. The piece will proceed according to a book that will be handed to the audience. The book contains words, phrases, diagrams and drawings that consist of simple lines; these are the commands and instructions for the dancers on stage. Every time a page is turned a new scene with fun and surprises unfolds, taking spectators into a world where words and images blend together. This is something nobody can conceive but Yamashita, who persists in working on the relationship between words and the body. A must see. (Atsuko Hisano, Program Director, The Saison Foundation)

Zan Yamashita
Choreographer/performance maker. Born in Osaka in 1970, Yamashita now lives in Kyoto. Among his works are: IT IS WRITTEN THERE, It’s Just Me, Coughing (signs for “inhale” and “exhale” and texts from “haiku” poems are projected on the screen while the performers move following the instructions), Daikoshin (fragments of world news are murmured on a real railroad track) and It Is Something Like A Garden (a network of communications using abandoned rubbish). Ahn Aesoon Dance Company
The company was established in 1985 under the direction of dancer and choreographer Ahn Aesoon. Based on Korean traditional culture and philosophy, its work focusing on contemporary society has drawn attention both in Korea and overseas. The company has grown to become one of Korea’s leading dance groups, actively creating new works every season. Since winning the grand prize at the Bagnolet Dance Competition in 1998, the troupe has toured major festivals around the world such as the Düsseldorf World Dance Alliance in Germany, the Singapore Arts Festival, and Dance Biennale Tokyo 2004, just to name a few. Ahn has been the artistic director of the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company since July 2013.Sang Ryul Han
