A girl shifted ever so light-footedly from the street to the world of contemporary dance and was loved by everyone, which, looking back at it now, is not hard to understand. There is no borderline dividing one type of dance from another. The chemical reaction between the in-fashion physicality and digital projections was welcomed as a new style of artistic creation. But once the style became popular and common, Akiko Kitamura dissociated herself from it. Like an Indian prince setting off on a journey to be free from sufferings, Kitamura wandered around the wild terrain of dance. En route, she encountered various cultures and civilizations, among which the arts of Southeast Asia particularly caught her attention. This is a collaboration, or better said, a crossbreeding. Going beyond a mere symbiosis of two distinguished beings, her work with Indonesian director and actor Yudi Ahmad Tajudin has triggered the creation of a new life form through fusion and linkage.
