<OUT OF CONTEXT – FOR PINA> is Platel‘s hommage to the late Pina Bausch. In his three previous presentations in Japan, the hysterical group physicality of these large-scale productions made us uncomfortable, existentially anxious. <OUT OF CONTEXT – FOR PINA> is different. Without live music or large-scale set designs each of the nine dancers’ individual ardent physicality surfaces. Of course this controversial piece still revels in Platel’s signature edginess, the distended forms, the extreme contortions, and strange seemingly coded movements of seemingly pre-linguistic inarticulate impulses. Platel’s new rich and multi-sensory frontier can only be discovered on the stage. (Tatsuro Ishii, Dance Critic)

TRAILER

profile
Born in 1956 in Ghent, Belgium, Alain Platel is trained as a remedial educationalist, and is an autodidact director. In 1984 he set up a small group with his friends and relatives which later became les ballets C de la B. After creating <Emma> in 1988 he became a full-time director. Since <Bonjour Madame> (1993), <La Tristeza Complice> (1995) and <Iets op Bach> (1998), he created numerous works to lead the international world’s arts scene. Currently, the company provides a platform for various choreographers, keeping to its principle of enabling promising performing artists from various disciplines and backgrounds to take part in the dynamic creative process. Its motto is: “This dance is for the world, and the world is for everyone.”
